Rosacea is a common, long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. It often appears as persistent facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and sometimes raised spots or pustules or thickened skin. These symptoms often occur in cycles, meaning you may experience frequent flare-ups followed by periods where the skin is clearer.
At our Harley Street dermatology clinic, we aim to help you control rosacea erythema and sudden facial flushing with expert skin treatments tailored to your specific subtype.
Feel Calm, Confident, & In Control of Your Skin Again
Living with rosacea can feel frustrating and unpredictable. It can affect self-esteem and confidence.
Rosacea often requires a multifaceted approach to treatment to reduce triggers, treat inflammation and treat redness due to dilated blood vessels in the skin.

Who gets Rosacea?
- More common in adults between 30 and 60 years old
- More frequently seen in fair-skinned individuals
- Both men and women can be affected, though men may develop more severe symptoms
Symptoms of Rosacea on the face
Rosacea can vary significantly from person to person. While some may only experience mild rosacea on the cheeks, others may deal with papulopustular rosacea (spots and pimples).
Common features include:
- Facial redness (usually across the cheeks, nose, forehead, or chin)
- Flushing or burning sudden episodes of skin warmth and red face.
- Visible small blood vessels also known as erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR).
- Raised spots or pustules often mistaken for acne, these rosacea zits require different medical care
- Thickened skin known as phymatous changes, most commonly appearing as a bulbous or red nose.
- Eye symptoms (dryness, irritation, redness) – known as ocular rosacea
If you are experiencing a red rash on the cheeks or red bumps on the nose, our clinical outcomes page showcases how we have successfully managed similar cases.
What Causes Rosacea Flare-Ups?
Understanding why rosacea occurs is the first step toward management. While the exact rosacea cause is unknown, several factors contribute to the inflammation:
- Demodex Mites: Recent research shows that some patients with papulopustular rosacea have a higher number of Demodex mites living in their hair follicles.
- Genetics: You may wonder, “is rosacea hereditary?” There is evidence that a family history of the condition increases your risk.
- Environmental Triggers: Sun exposure, spicy foods, alcohol (especially red wine), and stress are common triggers for rosacea.
Demodex-related Rosacea
Recent research shows that in some patients, rosacea can be linked to Demodex mites.
What happens with treatment?
Once the Demodex are treated, patients often notice that their skin becomes smoother, less irritated, and less red.
What are Demodex mites?
Demodex are tiny mites that naturally live on human skin, especially in hair follicles and oil glands. In some people with rosacea, there may be a higher number of these mites, which can cause irritation and inflammation.
How does it feel?
Demodex-related rosacea can make the skin feel rough, similar to fine sandpaper, and may increase redness and sensitivity.
How do we diagnose this?
At our clinic, we use dermoscopy to assess the skin and check for the presence of Demodex mites.
